The story itself isn't left or right, although it's concoction was intended to inflame the left and was massively overplayed initially, and then tickled the right pink when it was clearly staged and now gets an overabundance of air time from right wing media.

I mean, even when it's covered it is right taunting left or left taunting right.

Maybe that's how you think but when we talk about media here, I don't really think of blogs and op-eds since that's just someone with an opinion. Might as well include facebook posts, tweets, and tiktoks since a lot of people treat them like news too.

If they're tweets affiliated with Joy Reid or someone else that people follow for news and opinion, sure. Misguided as it may be, are you implying that people don't shape their own opinions or treat opinion as if it were news? If so, then I guess that let's Tucker Carlson and his staff off the hook. I mean it's just like random tiktoks.

I'm saying for the sake of conversation here, putting legit news outlets, op-eds, social, etc into a lump called media is a waste of time and gives the conversation no meaning. "Well I read it on facebook" is a nonstarter for me. If it's important to you to include opinions with news I'll try to keep that in mind and address your thoughts on the media accordingly.

I don't see this as being about what I think is important much as what I think what people consume and process is important in the context of "media". This conversation wasn't about people here; it was about what MSM was putting out to the general population. If you want to limit the definition of MSM to "just the news, and nothing but the news" in this thread, fine. This seems like arguing just to argue. That piece was styled as "From The ReidOut with Joy Reid." And the reason I grabbed that is because when you google "msnbc smollett" all that is returned quite literally is opinion pieces, and not much of that either. The only "newsy" content was a single link indicating that he was taking the stand and then [disqualifier alert] a tweet... "BREAKING: Actor Jussie Smollett found guilty of falsely reporting a hate crime against him in 2019". Which brings us full circle. The coverage of this story and the zeal for highlighting either the original or final perspective on his claims was influenced by the leans of various media outlets.

I can't agree with that. Faking a hate crime is different than committing a hate crime. He should get the punishment commensurate with making false claims to police and perjuring himself, and nothing more. I think it's possible he'lll spend a little time behind bars on those counts, although perhaps not. Really the strongest justice that could happen would be for everyone to denounce his lies, although some or embracing them and enabling him.

I don’t think he should get the same as a hate crime. But he did do some serious damage to hate crime reporting. And the next time a celebrity is the victim of an actual hate crime sadly the first thing some will think is “is he Smollettimg it?”

Definitely not a hate crime but I do think he warrants punishment. Resources were wasted “helping” him and it will impact people believing actual attacks as you said.
