Dutch health authorities announced on Tuesday that they found the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus in cases dating back as long as 11 days, indicating that it was already spreading in western Europe before the first cases were identified in southern Africa. The RIVM health institute said it found Omicron in samples dating from November 19 and 23.
South African politicians and scientists have said they feel as though they're being punished for their advanced COVID-19 screening program, which caught the variant and enabled other nations to respond quickly to it, but has resulted in the travel bans which largely target southern African nations
    Mmmhmm.

I'm sure flights from the Netherlands will be banned imminently.

It doesn't help that rich Western nations have hoarded vaccines.

Yes but that is not the problem in SA as someone posted earlier. They have plenty of vaccine but even more hesitancy.

My bad, I missed that discussion.

I have lost patience with anti-vaxxers. They are a plague on society.

My kiddos got their second vaccines today. It was a big relief for me, despite knowing that the shots aren't perfect. My loves are much safer today than they were previously, or will be in a couple of weeks.

Another student in Q after coming in contact with someone with COVID.

This is unlikely to ever go away. In twenty years, I’ll tell my students about what it was like before the pandemic and they look at me in the same way they do when I say I grew up without a computer or the internet. Sheer disbelief.

What is sad is this could be over now. But we have morons listening to comedians telling them to eat horse paste

I think the chances of it being over we’re pretty slim. I think the first two months had to be approached much differently.

But I certainly think things could be a lot better.

I work with a staggering amount of people who don’t think masks should be worn in school while not having had the vaccine.

The virus may be around but it wouldn’t be a pandemic. And first US case of Omicron found in California

I do think it is more than a US issue but misinformation is world wide. It might not be but the end would likely be in sight. Now I doubt there will ever be an end

Two weeks into the shut down, after our district had closed, we had an online faculty meeting. During that prediction, many were making plans for us to return in a couple of weeks. I suggested people take a step back as we weren’t likely to return until the fall. Only two out of thirty agreed with me. I was asked why and I have a few reasons. Then I made six predictions. I was only wrong about one of them, that the vaccine wouldn’t be available to the public until 2022, maybe late 2021 if we got lucky.

The rest, I pretty much nailed. But I was mocked by many colleagues (to my face and behind my back) for the rest. I don’t believe my predictions were particularly insightful either. I’m sure many others held similar thoughts at the time.

When we returned to in-school learning, people were bitching about masks. I said they better get used to them cos we’ll be wearing them a year from now. Again, I was laughed at.

Now, those that laughed the hardest also happen to be the ones who have caught COVID or not had the vaccine. Stunned I tell ya.
