The Red Sox have lost 5 straight. It happens. But they have lost them by a combined score of 67-13. That's a minus 54 run differential over 5 games. According to ESPN that's the worst run differential in a 5-game losing streak since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.
For those of you not familiar with the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, they went 20-134 in a 154-game schedule. Back then owners could own more than one team, and the Spiders' owners bought the St. Louis Cardinals after 1898 and moved almost all the good Spider players to St. Louis, leaving Cleveland with the worst MLB team ever. (The ownership rule was later changed precisely because of this.)
The Spiders only got to play a little more than half of their 1899 home schedule. Their TOTAL attendance for their 41 home games was 6,088, or about 145 per game. The National League finally declared them a road team for the remainder of 1899 and then folded the franchise after the season.
RIGHT ON, Red Sox!
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, when they said "sit down" I stood up.
