Will the Yankees lean into the legalization of sports betting? - Pinstripe Alley

"There is a major financial benefit for the owners that they will do everything to take advantage of (sports betting), as some already have. If a given team, such as the Yankees, opens a sportsbook that is attached to the stadium but not inside of it, then the team can shield those revenues from the MLB revenue sharing system. That is crazy!

In other words, all the money that is made from the sportsbook will be kept for the team. That could be advantageous for a few reasons. The Yankees will probably have the most booming sportsbook of any team in MLB, given the market they’re in. That is clearly a financial advantage that they would have over most markets, and if Hal Steinbrenner is up to it, it could be a clear competitive advantage. I’m skeptical that is how Steinbrenner would choose to use the extra cash flow, but it’s still possible."

I've been looking for a definitive answer to this issue. If the teams are benefitting from this new source of revenue, are the players negotiating for a slice of this revenue, and should they get it?

My first impulse is to say yes, the players should get a percentage of this.

Yankees news: Rachel Balkovec meets media; top Yankee prospects - Pinstripe Alley

"Speaking of Jasson Dominguez, BP released its annual list of the top prospects in the Yankees’ system. It’s behind a paywall, but one note of intrigue is that while familiar names are at the top in Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza (plus a pleasant surprise in Double-A arm Randy Vasquez at No. 3), Dominguez fell to No. 6. On the plus side, other outlets aren’t nearly as down on Dominguez. On the negative, well, as BP notes, he did hit the ball on the ground a lot last year"

IMO Dominguez can and should be trade bait for the right return - one that would make the 2022 Yankees (and beyond) stronger.

OF prospects (even outstanding ones) are plentiful. My guess is this young man's probability of becoming an above-average MLer is against the odds. Nothing personal against him, I just think he can help the 2022 Yankees be more successful.

The lure of gambling revenues is the elephant in the room on why franchises are selling for astronomical valuations.

btw: I don’t doubt that (similar to ownership’s ancillary revenues that flow to his family as a Dividend) any gambling revenues will be ownership retained and not additionally invested in the team on the field.

btw2: I don’t believe widespread gambling similar to the Uk (I attended a Manchester United game years ago and you could bet on just about anything, next goal, score at half/final, players etc) is good for the game.

I wouldn't trade Dominguez yet because I don't think he has the trade value that you seem to think he does. Teams looking to deal real value that can help your team now tend to want MLB-ready (or close to it) talent.

And yeah as recently cited, Tatis Jr., who was still 3 years away at the time, was traded for "Big Game James" Shields, but Shields had shown clear signs of decline the previous year (95 ERA+) and was off and running at 93 ERA+ with the Padres when dealt in midseason.

Would you trade Dominguez for a starter hovering at 95-ish ERA+? I wouldn't, not on a bet.

I don't think you're getting game-changing talent on spec right now for Dominguez.

Jasson Dominguez exceeding Yankees' expectations (mlb.com)

"Rated as the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline, the switch-hitting speedster has generated comparisons to some of the greatest athletes in baseball history, like Bo Jackson, Mickey Mantle and Mike Trout.

“There’s a lot of very talented people, and he has a higher level of degree and talent than most,” Cashman said. “If he can obviously put that together and match that to his performance level, you’re going to be talking about something very special.”

Seems to me when you want to keep a prospect you don't play him up like this.....you try to hide him....

He struggled at the lowest levels of the minor leagues. He came advertised as the next Soto or Trout, but those guys were dominating at those levels at the same age.

Still early, but so far he looks like yet another over-hyped Yankee prospect.

Melky Cabrera announced his retirement today. He had a pretty nice career and made almost $75M.

I remember back in 2009 Brett Gardner was coming up and taking some playing time away from Melky. I always saw more of a ceiling for Cabrera. But the Yanks decided to stick with Gardner and trade Melky for Boone Logan.

In retrospect - did the Yanks make the right choices?

                        BTW, Gardner's earned about $89M

Fast-forward 12 years later, and Gardner is still taking playing time away from young talent.

The more things change, the more they remain the same...

Nah. Backup plan if they can't/don't sign Brett Gardner to another one-year deal.

I'd prefer they try to get Melky not to retire (joke) instead of going back to, as everyone's predicting, Brett Popgun. Cabrera was let go in lieu of Gardner primarily, I think, because of his supposed negative influence on his buddy Cano at the time.
