We are. But that won’t stop Russian Intelligence from employing hacking groups just the same. Cozy Bear, or Advanced Persistent Threat 29 (APT29) is such a group. It’s about undermining Western institutions as much as it is finding a cure.

      Re: Covid-19

The Trump administration is trying to block billions of dollars for states to conduct testing and contact tracing in the upcoming coronavirus relief bill, people involved in the talks said Saturday.

The administration is also trying to block billions of dollars that GOP senators want to allocate for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and billions more for the Pentagon and State Department to address the pandemic at home and abroad, the people said.

The administration’s posture has angered some GOP senators, the officials said, and some lawmakers are trying to push back and ensure that the money stays in the bill.
      Because of course they are.

Except that’s a compromise to make with the Democrats. They’re still pissing off the Republicans.

The administration will probably cave, but it would be fun to see them override a Trump veto.

“These kids have got to get back to school,” Parson told Cox. “They’re at the lowest risk possible. And if they do get COVID-19, which they will — and they will when they go to school — they’re not going to the hospitals. They’re not going to have to sit in doctor’s offices. They’re going to go home and they’re going to get over it.”

He emphasized that people who are at high risk of becoming seriously ill should be protected but said most people in the state were smart enough to figure out how to stay safe without government interventions such as mask mandates.

“We gotta move on,” he said. “We can’t just let this thing stop us in our tracks.”

A nationwide remote learning option would be a great alternative if more households in this country had internet access.

The lack of quality internet access America remains one of the forgotten things I point out when people ask me what it is like living in the greatest country in the world.

It would be a minimally acceptable alternative (yet still an improvement over the lack of direction we're seeing right now). But, remote learning for pre-teens, and for the many disinterested teen students, will never be a "great alternative." Kids don't learn at grade level when they physically attend class. They're going to fail miserably without that direct contact.

Idiots. Kids will pass it to the vulnerable people in their households. And yes, some kids will die. Minnesota just reported its first death of a child from covid. It was a 9 month old baby with no underlying health conditions. NINE MONTHS OLD. AZ had our first one two months ago. The child was 11. And we know nothing about what longterm effects it could have on these children. They still could die young or become disabled a few years down the road from effects we know nothing about.

One of the problems is that no one has been prepared to transition to online learning, which shouldn't be assumed to be exactly the same as traditional classroom activity. At the end of the last school year, I got to witness my son doing his classes by zoom, and some teachers made the adjustment better than others, and some were just frustrating for him. Fortunately for us, he's pretty self-motivated, and understood that if he completed his offline work efficiently, he would have a lot of free time during the day between zoom classes. We're also lucky that he's old enough to handle much of this independently, and that we have access to decent internet, a reliable computer, etc.

Watching the U.S., it strikes me that too much time is being wasted on the politics of this rather than trying to plan how to better serve students during the pandemic. Disparities are only going to get worse as people struggle with childcare issues, internet and hardware access, etc. Once again, Trump's administration is pushing people to act like things are normal rather than how to support people in an abnormal time. It's incredibly frustrating to watch.

This is the crux of our entire problem. We are the only country that politicized the virus and look where it's gotten us.

Brazil also politicized the virus, and from what I can tell, things got even worse there.

Our district hasn’t made any decisions yet but some nearby ones have. At the moment, they all feel like putting a band aid on a 12 inch gash.
