    Re: Covid-19

South Korea has ordered the closure of all schools and kindergartens in the greater Seoul area following a rise in coronavirus cases there. Nearly 200 staff and students have been infected in the greater Seoul area over the past two weeks.
Many of the new infection clusters are linked to a number of right-wing Protestant churches whose members took part in a mass rally in Seoul just over a week ago.

People come in from other countries, from other states. The airports, seaports, major train stations and bus depots are all responsible for keeping people coming into major towns all the time.

I do not believe that you can shut down the entire United States for a long period of time, much less two weeks. I also believe that we would all have to stay in our place for longer than this for everything to all blow over. Going where when it blows over, I'm not sure.

You would need to have some disease fighter sprayed into the air for all that to end. The virus can't be expected to just go away on its own, I believe.
Yeah like I said I have some doubts it would actually work because getting everyone in this country to all pull in the same direction simultaneously is more difficult than herding cats, but if we really tried at the very beginning of this thing (when everyone was scared and before wearing a friggin mask became political) we probably could have pulled it off. That was our window of opportunity for a grand plan.

Instead of just paying people to stay home for 2 weeks, we went 5 months into this thing and now people are desperate or stir crazy enough to leave the fallout shelter and live in the fallout instead.

A study released Thursday shows that children may play a larger role in community spread of COVID-19 than previously understood.

The research out of Massachusetts General Hospital and MassGeneral Hospital for Children shows that infected children — even those without symptoms — can have higher levels of virus in their airways than adults hospitalized in intensive care units.

That’s the point, they were handled well.

My daughter is starting in person classes next week for her masters. We’ll see how long they make it before going to online. She’s at a very small STEM college so if it can work anywhere, that’s probably the place.

The head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration walked back his claim that an experimental therapy had provided a dramatic benefit to Covid-19 patients, a rare reversal for an agency that has prided itself on rock-solid science and public trust.

In a shift that perplexed some doctors, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has changed its Covid-19 testing guidelines to say some people without symptoms may not need to be tested, even if they've been in close contact with someone known to have the virus. Previously, the CDC said viral testing was appropriate for people with recent or suspected exposure, even if they were asymptomatic.

Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University who was previously Baltimore's health commissioner, said on CNN's New Day on Wednesday that the testing guideline changes make no sense.
“If we didn’t do testing, we would have no cases.”

Um, they can still spread the virus - wouldn't it be a good idea if they knew they had it?

I haven't posted about the virus in Brazil for a while. I think everybody sees Brazil a firm #2 in the bad rankings and getting ever closer to the US. President Bolsonaro tested positive, but never got sick, as far as we know.

The WaPo just published a fascinating article on how the infection in Manaus, in the middle of the Amazon, is suddenly receding, apparently on its own. I know Manaus, and it's ideal for the propagation of a virus--high density, poverty, weak health care, low education, bad sanitation, etc.

I'm not sure what to make of this.

Otherwise, my family in Brazil is hunkered down and no one has taken sick, including 92 year-old Tia Hilda, who tested positive in June, as 9 of the 36 residents in her nursing home died. She's a tough old bird.

Thanks. They are requiring everyone to be tested to come on campus for classes and must wear their bracelet indicating they were negative but I have no clue what the followup protocall is after the initial testing. She's an in off campus apartment with one other person and all of her classes are "small" the largest I think is 16 students. So fingers crossed.
