    Re: Covid-19

And despite how much I agree with the sentiment to honor John Lewis and his contributions to American Civil Rights, I agree with you a large scale funeral with a bunch of people during a Pandemic with the potential for super spreader status was dumb.

Who gets to make the decisions.....if teachers going to a school are an unacceptable risk, how do we justify telling a grocery store clerk that he needs to go to work? If Sturgis was unacceptable, should multiple funeral ceremonies for John Lewis have been allowed?

If Americans aren't willing to do what makes sense because they read a conspiracy theory on Facebook, what teeth would a national policy have?

Again, I fully agree that the lack of any sort of cogent national guidance has been a horror show. I'm just not convinced that a cogent policy would be enforceable, or that it wouldn't exceed the average American's attention span.
Call it a national strategy. National guidelines.

        I'm good with that.

There's no enforcement piece, but some sort of national guidelines (even national recommendations) would have been far more effective than "maybe bleach, maybe sunshine, maybe it'll just go away."

I genuinely believe he would've preferred that not to happen under the circumstances.

Unless you believe American exceptionalism refers to an inability to follow clear rules, I'd suggest it's completely possible to have had a more organized, rigorous and useful Covid policy. It hasn't been perfect, but I've lived through one in France, and the "curve-bending" throughout Europe is testament to what can be done.

The difference is one of leadership which, sadly, the U.S. has not seen through this crisis. If Trump had been as vigorous in pushing people to wear masks and distance, had really focused on supporting small business rather than making sure his cronies were taken care of, and invested in testing and building the capacity to track and trace, the country would be in a very different place right now.

You pass a bill that provides COVID-19 relief funding and condition the ability of states to receive such funds on passage of a Statewide Mask Mandate. And before you cry foul, it's been done before with Federal Highway Funds being conditioned on raising the State legal drinking age to 21.

Second you have the CDC publish guidelines for size of gatherings allowed and metrics required for reopening various types of business or institutions for in person meetings and actually follow it.

I don't know John Lewis, he was very nasty to me. Didn't vote for me or come to my ignaguration.
Making funds contingent on compliance with federal regulations isn’t constitutionally questionable as long as the regulation is relevant to the funding. That idea is on solid constitutional grounds.

                    Sigh. It was inevitable.

I am very excited about this entirely safe and effective vaccine that will miraculously appear right before election day.

This is not the free healthcare I envisioned.

Oh I'm sure it won't be free either.
