Either way you can't keep things shut down, everything should be open with appropriate safeguards (masks and physical distancing)
It doesn't change the current behavior recommendations. The last thing we need right now are a bunch of people running around maskless because they think they immune.

      @albamonica

President Trump just now in the Rose Garden: "We're rounding the corner."

VP Pence moments earlier: "The American people should anticipate that cases will rise in the days ahead."

CDC Director Dr. Redfield to me Friday: "We're nowhere near the end."

And a radiologist, not Fauci, is asked by Trump to give the reassuring words

The problem with Trump is he thinks his lies are actually the truth.

I'm constantly in a state of despair about the scale of this national tragedy. It never, ever had to be this bad. We shouldn't have lost over 200,000 lives. It torments me.

I'm not sure how we get past it, either. Even if we get a new president, I don't know what he'll actually be able to accomplish to fight this thing.

Maybe we can increase production of PPE and get more stimulus money, but a nationwide shutdown/quarantine or nationwide mask mandate is not realistic. Too many people have made up their minds on what is and is not risky/safe behavior to all suddenly pull in one direction, thanks in large part to the mixed messaging from our current leadership.

This has made me give up on much of humanity. If you refuse to wear a mask knowing it will save lives, you are garbage

The problem is that just as many people "know" masks are useless, or they "know" wearing masks cause health problems. These people don't think of themselves as garbage putting other lives at risk; they think they know something everybody else is too dumb to see.

And at this point, I have no idea how any president (new or incumbent) would even begin to bridge that divide. I think our only realistic options are to increase testing, increase PPE production/availability, encourage states to mandate masks/social distancing wherever possible and hope a vaccine is found sooner than later.

I don't think we need a nationwide shutdown or quarantine but I don't think it's too late for a nationwide mandate. Even if it's not fully enforced, it can help. Most people are honest and law-abiding. Ramp up testing and contact tracing. More PPE for sure. I'd like to see free masks to anyone that needs one. Maybe have a dispenser at the door of every business? More education - public services commercials, signage, social meda ads, etc. Just pound away at it. Repetition works.

What Tex said. CDC said if 95% wore a mask for 8-12 weeks the virus would be under control. It a drastic change in lifestyle

I'm fine with all of that, but prepare yourselves mentally for the onslaught of "see, I told you Biden's a socialist!" messaging from the right in response to any of that happening.

Eh. I expect that anyway. It should be ignored. Stay on message. Don't let the people that disagree control the narrative. Act like a republican.

I'm not worried so much about controlling the narrative as I am about half the country ignoring the message because of the color of the tie in the White House. That doesn't mean I don't want to see us attempt those things you listed.

This is where I disagree. I don't believe it's half the country or even close to that. If it's even half the trump voters I'd be surprised. A consistent, national campaign will make a difference.

Australia seemed to make it work and they seem to have a similar number of “Don’t Tread on Me” types as the US does.
