You clearly know nothing about the scientific community, yet you amazingly are passing judgement...People did say things on twitter, but there is lots of misinformation, so it's basically pointless and gets drowned out. How is the average person supposed to tell the difference between people who appear to be experts but really are just twitter trolls (e.g. Eugene Gu), people like Fauci and WHO who provided misinformation (allegedly on purpose??), and then scientists tweeting out factual information? It's an impossible situation for the average person and why it's valuable to become self sufficient in the ability to process information.

In terms of victim blaming...There's a difference between blaming a victim of a crime and a victim of one's own ignorance. Obviously Fauci, CDC, Trump, etc are at fault for not providing accurate information. But if you don't have the ability to interpret scientific information and then somebody tells you a lie and you believe it despite contrary evidence being out there, you are also at fault to some degree for being ignorant (assuming you are moderately well educated). You don't need to be a trained scientist to read and analyze scientific information (for example, investors do it all the time in regards to biotech companies). It's really not that difficult.

The compelling argument is that the POTUS is willingly placing the American people in extreme danger with his misinformed rhetoric and behavior during a severe medical crisis that we haven't experienced in over 100 years. That's it in a nutshell.

This is an unprecedented event that has killed over 200.000 people and many more are going to die. They are not just statistics on a spreadsheet. If scientists with an actual platform (not twitter scientists), won't use it to speak out, they are part of the problem.

And then we move onto more victim blaming. What a stunning lack of empathy and understanding of ordinary people. If you are in any way representative of the "scientific community", what a sad, pathetic, little group you are. Hopefully you are an outlier.

One could even take it a step further and argue that this administration using misinformation and herd immunity as a way to deal with a virus that has a death rate proven to disproportionately affect old people, low income people, minorities, and those with underlying health conditions is a low-key form of eugenics.

They say he idea is to “protect the most vulnerable” while letting it spread among others. Of course, they’ve given no indication how they’d do that, or even what it means.

You don’t know me-amazing that you would resort to personal attacks simply because I have expressed an opinion that you disagree with. I’m not sure what prevents you from sticking to the discussion topic rather than resort to insults, but it is extremely reminiscent of Trumpian tactics. What fun is a discussion where everyone shares the same opinion? Personally I’m happy to have people disagree with me and I don’t presume to judge you or others personally who may not like what I have to say.

To address your point, even though I shouldn’t after that post. Twitter is a platform that many scientists use to express their opinion. It’s a good platform-but I agree it’s difficult to follow because good scientists can get drowned out by incompetent pseudo scientists. And my point about NEJM wasn’t that they shouldn’t provide accurate medical information like saying wearing masks is good (this is what we were discussing wrt Fauci/WHO in March), it’s that they shouldn’t get political (this was a separate discussion).

Iowa's governor (Covid Kim Reynolds) said this week... Iowans will just need to 'live with it'. She is often seen without a mask at political events such as this.
p.s. Iowa had some of their highest daily infection rates this week.

Iowa also stuck with TestIowa well after there were serious questions about its reliability and after Utah had quietly stopped using its parent company. The New Yorker had a pretty good piece in June about the powers that be in Utah entering a contract with what was essentially a group of tech bros that had no background in the field.
