      Re: Covid-19

My second shot on Thursday left me with a fever of 101 yesterday. I guess being sick for one day is worth it.

Back to normal today? Difficult, but normal?

I feel fine today. Plus I seem to be able to shoot webbing out of my wrists.

          Thanks for asking.

My SiL is a nurse @ Mercy Medical Center here in Baltimore. She described how she felt the couple days after her second shot as "the worst she's felt in her entire life."

Is the second shot stronger or...?

Weird. I had no reaction other than mild arm soreness for a day. Both shots.

FWIW, I had the Pfizer vaccine. Which did she have?

                It's the exact same vaccine.

I'm hoping I turn into a crocodile. Which vaccine did you get?

Aha. Everyone I know in CT who has received the vaccine have been getting Pfizer. They don't seem to be having any issues. ymmv

She got the Moderna vaccine. And you know...I woke up this morning remembering I forgot to include a key point as to why she may have felt the worst she had ever felt in her life.

She had a (scheduled) hysterectomy between doses. Don’t do that if you can avoid it.

My second Moderna shot is Feb. 24. I'll be sure to respect that.

With the first one, I had arm soreness, but a little less than the high dose quadrivalent flu shot I had in November.

                            Could be significant.

I had a fever for a day, but it didn't make the top ten of "worst I've ever felt." Probably not the top 100.

The way immune responses work is that you retain memory from prior infections. So the second dose of the vaccine has more side effects because you have a ton of memory immune cells primed and ready to pounce once you get inoculated (as opposed to the first dose where the vaccine is completely new to your immune system). This is also partly why 2 dose vaccine regiments are good-that second dose is starting from a larger reservoir of immune cells able to recognize the virus-and therefore your immune system is honing in on the optimal set of memory cells to retain.

As far as I know, there is no notable difference between Pfizer and Moderna in the clinical trials, so I would expect anything you are hearing about side effects of one vs the other to be anecdotal.
