The problem with that is you'd create a deeper divide of services between communities with varying levels of access to the vaccine/healthcare. I like this idea better:

Here's how his idea works: Everyone who gets vaccinated would be eligible for a $1,000 payment from the federal government. You'd get $200 for taking both vaccine shots. And then an additional $800 once the country reaches herd immunity.

The idea is textbook economics. People respond to incentives. And incentives can be used not just for the sake of individuals, but for the benefit of society as a whole. Like insurance discounts for safe driving. Or cash payouts for employees who quit smoking. And they have been tried with vaccinations — for example in rural India where childhood immunization rates were low and even a relatively small incentive — a sack of lentils and metal plates — raised them significantly.

Give it out at every public school at registration. We could get it to people.

Immunizations are already required for public school enrollment.

What about those with weakened immune systems or autoimmune conditions? There is little data available on the safety of the vaccines for them. Should those people be forced to get it to attend public school, or be excluded from attending if they don't get it?

And that's not including restricting access to the other services you mentioned if they don't get vaccinated. What if a cancer patient can't get on a city bus because she made the decision not to get vaccinated out of concern for potential interactions with other meds she may be taking?

That's a discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen.

I'm as annoyed with the conspiracy anti-vaxxers as you are, but given that this is still the late-stage capitalist oligarchy US, a government mandated vaccine passbook program tied to any sort of access to commerce or taxpayer-funded services is not going to end well.

I'm okay with that for established vaccines with plenty of data behind them. The COVID vaccine is still too new to add to that list of requirements IMO.

Most states, even CA, have exemptions for that. Until recently, CA even had a personal/religious exemption for vaccines.

I understand that. My argument is specific to the COVID vaccine, which jlw1980 was advocating making mandatory for services such as public schools in an attempt to increase our overall vaccination percentage. I disagree with that approach.

There have always been exemptions for those people. This would be no different.

Why would somebody with a weakened immune system or autoimmune disease not get the vaccine? Which cancer medications make taking vaccines dangerous? If anything you’d want to get vaccinated between treatments so the vaccine is more effective, but it’s not like there a risk to taking the vaccine if you have cancer.

The only people who shouldn’t get it are the extremely few who have allergies to specific vaccine components, but even they may be able to get it (if they are allergic to Pfizer but not J&J).

                        Re: Covid-19

I think there's a little confusion about vaccines. Children that can't get vaccines against the common childhood illnesses because they are immunocompromised in some way can't get them because those vaccines contain a modified live pathogen. Since that is not the case with this vaccine, once it's been tested on children there really is no any reason to expect there to be a problem even those for immunocompromised kids.

I can't see if this has been discussed anywhere else but Cuomo announced that venues with over 10,000 seats can be at 10% capacity effective later this month. Indoor venues included. Fans need proof of a negative test within 3 days of the event. Any word on whether the Yankees will allow this for the 2021 season.

                            Good points.

I can't wait for my kids to get it. There's absolutely no reason for it not to be mandated for public school enrollment.

One shot down, one to go.

My sisters called me yesterday, asking how I got my first shot, because my 70-year old mother has been trying to get one, but can’t. I hopped on the computer and tried to get her an appointment, but there was only one slot available in a pretty wide search, and someone beat me to it. It's ridiculous that my job is able to get a hospital to come up and vaccinate the entire district, but my 70-year old diabetic mother cannot find an appointment in her county.

In non-shocking news, RI gets an F for vaccine rollout.

                                https://www.wpri.com/target-12/harva...ass-fails-too/

Rhode Island currently ranks in the bottom 10 states nationwide for coronavirus deaths per capita; vaccine doses administered; use of available doses; and speed of getting shots into arms. The school calculated each state’s per-capita metrics based on its adult population, excluding those under 18.

“[I]f we compare the states to 50 runners in a series of marathons, we can see who is leading — as well as who is bringing up the rear,” Graham Allison, the Harvard professor behind the rankings, explained in an article on the school’s website. By comparison, Connecticut got an “A” for vaccinations per capita, while West Virginia got an “A” on all three vaccination metrics.

It's been two months and they're still on people 75 and above. Meanwhile I have friends and family in several other states who have gotten their shots. I'm a healthy 40 year old, I'm not pissed that I haven't gotten it, but my mom is 73 and a former smoker and she can't get an appointment. Meanwhile her friends from NY have all gotten it, younger friends in IL have it, cousins in FL got it. Way to go RI.
