And when he and his flock do reference it instead of calling it the coronavirus or COVID-19, they fall it the Wuhan Flu. Which is wrong on both counts as it has nothing to do with the flu.
And what did you mean when you said "flu". Are you implying that this is just the flu? That seems awfully irresponsible of you. (Just one second of what it would be like if you were Trump and I was a desperate reporter)

Half the staff rejected it because of the source. Xenophobia is very real and very dangerous.

Re: Covid-19
Originally posted by The_Man_With_No_Plan View PostI feel like I've attempted it a few times on this forum, but it's ultimately pretty futile. Especially here. People are very passionate about the issue, and it's not worth angering someone and risk being hated on a forum where I mostly just want to talk baseball. I also don't want to turn this thread into another Trump thread (if that hasn't been done already).
I also don't want to be accused of avoiding the questions... so I'll quickly say that defending Trump himself as a person is pretty impossible. But he ran at a time where people were very frustrated with American politics and was lucky to be doing it against someone who had a lot of skeletons in her closet and wasn't exactly the most likable person. It was an insane shock when he won, and I feel like the left has dealt with that by trying to make everything he does seem like the worst thing ever. That's really my biggest complaint. If he was treated and reported on fairly, his shtick would get pretty tired and it would be easy to legitimately criticize him, but when an entire party has to passionately be 100% against every single thing the dude says, they back themselves into an impossibly non-existent corner... and that's essentially what happened. They're about to nominate a guy who can barely construct a sentence, but he's going to get major national support just because he disagrees with Trump.
But whatever. I could go on, but I'm sure people don't care. I'm boring myself at this point. Just didn't want to seem like I was ignoring the issue.Russian warship, go **** yourself

Originally posted by Bub View PostI have 2 wells, one of which is drilled into 120 feet of bedrock and produces the best water I've ever had anywhere, and the other which is drilled 500 feet into shale and clay, and is treated to remove what we don't like about it. Point is that even bad tasting tap water is drinkable so there's not need to be overly concerning about running out of bottled, except in a few areas where the tap water has been already deemed to be unsafe because of contamination they can't fix.
The final blow came when the well began to recover more slowly. It was either drill the well deeper or hook up to city water. We went with hooking up to city water and it was best decision I ever made. (I kept the well for irrigation purposes). You wanna know what? You gotta problem with Luis Cessa, you gotta problem with me. And I suggest you let that one marinate

The real comp is after 9/11, how many people thought badly of Muslims?
*EDIT* Also I'm a huge snob who can only drink bottled water. Buying two gallons of Poland Spring is part of my weekly routine.

Originally posted by philleotardo View PostWith my 19, 17 and 15 year olds out of school for 3 weeks, I pulled myself out of a trip to Florida with my wife- 19 year old is asthmatic, flight is with Jet Blue (had a positive passenger) and the first three days are in Ft Lauderdale where 1000s of spring breakers are sure to be from who knows where.
My wife and son are mad at me.
The back story part is that originally we were supposed to go on a cruise that was a work reward for my wife. She really put in the sweat to earn it. Cruise got canceled but we still had a hotel and airfare. Decided to make a 9 day trip out of it. Until I didn’t. Also, she paid for *everything* which meant a lot to her.
Did I overreact? I was supposed to visit my college roommate in Jville, but when I told him I wasn’t coming he said “Yeah, I would hope not.” Man, I sweat this decision all week.
A holiday lost is definitely not cool. Weeks or even months begging medical staff to prioritise one of your family members, watching them get intubated (which is traumatic even if you fully recover, I'm told), even if you don't lose someone, is significantly less fun.
And there will always be the possibility that going into the outside world unnecessarily killed someone I never even knew about, just because I absent-mindedly put my hand on a railing or a doorhandle as an asymptomatic carrier.
To spin it positively: after these events, the travel industry are going to be desperate for customers. There are going to be some great bargains out there when things are less insane. You can start planning your dream vacation now, and I'll bet the prices will be really freakin' low when the industry gets back up and running and realises it has huge capacity, massive sunk costs, and no bookings.
Be seeing you,

But I also think that not calling it that does nothing to help xenophobia. Anyone dumb enough to think negatively of Asians at this time is lumped into the same pitiful group of people who thought negatively of Muslims after 9/11.

And all of them go on social media and share their thoughts and memes where they are picked up by others with the same deficits and their numbers grow. But you're right. Not calling it Wuhan is not going to stop xenophobia but calling it that can surely make the xenophobia grow. Just like the Muslim hate grew post 9/11.
And I don't know... at least with 9/11 there was a possible reason to change people's minds (all based on emotion and irrational thought, but it was more plausible). With this, I can safely guess that anyone who was xenophobic after this pandemic was likely xenophobic before this pandemic. No matter what it's called.
