Time for a Brazil update. After a Trump copycat COVID-19 disaster, with the second largest death toll in the world, things are finally turning around. They have sourced enough vaccine for the whole country within a decent time frame. First shots are in 40%+ of all adults, and the pace of vaccinations is ramping up. New cases are still high, but about half of their peak a few months ago. Age band is now down to 40 and up. Vaccinations are one thing that Brazil does well. Everyone has a vaccine record card, as there are strict requirements for travel in yellow fever areas, and school vaccinations are taken seriously. Most impressive compared to the US, 94% of all Brazilians plan to get the vaccine as soon as it is available to them. I can see a future where Brazil looks better than the US by Christmas. If Bolsonaro gets the Trump treatment in the fall, I foresee his replacement going mandatory on COVID vaccine on his/her Inauguration Day.(Jan 1, 2022)

Here is a picture taken by my ex- as she rolls up for her second shot of Astra-Zeneca in the market square of small city of about 500K in the interior of São Paulo state. The optimism and attitude of the whole country has changed in the last few weeks.

I heard on the news today that 61 cases have been tied to the Olympics, and they haven't even started.

I love watching the Olympics. I always have. But I think this article is right.

I’m not really sure why I, as a (mostly) sane and vaccinated person should care a whole lot about the half of the country that isn’t vaccinated.

Yes I realize there is a societal cost (much the way smoking or excess drinking cause societal issues), but if the anti vaxxers are willing to risk their health and lives, what do I really care?

I wish them well, and if I had my druthers, I’d like everybody to get properly vaccinated, but at the end of the day it’s not keeping me up at night.

Why should you care? Because the unvaccinated spread the disease much faster allowing it to mutate, possibly beyond the protection offered by the vaccine. They also spread it to those who for medical reasons can’t get the vaccine. Usually because the are allergic to one of the components.

we are already seeing a problem with the delta variant of the virus. The epsilon variant doesn’t appear to be problematic but the lambda variant looks like it might be as problematic as the delta variant.

the quicker a vast majority of the population is vaccinated the greater the chance to control the outbreaks.

beyond that COVID cases strain medical resources that had to be taken away from other areas of care.
