But then why is your outrage not the same for China's government? Or Italy's government? Or Spain's government? One country isn't going to prevent a global pandemic from happening, so we're either all responsible, or no one is responsible. That's where I'm not following your point. It seems to lack consistency, and that lack of consistency seems to only apply to Donald Trump.

By not addressing (and, in fact, minimizing the issue, and making it harder to get information on emerging cases in our country, added to the fact that the government screwed up the test) he made it worse in the country.

Hmm. But then this comes off as if you only care about the United States. I guess if you view the USA as being the center of the universe and the only country where human beings exist, I can start to see your point of view. But I'm of the opinion that a global pandemic affects.... uh... the globe.

The country basically shut down over the weekend, and people were still out at bars for St. Patrick's Day in NYC. I just don't think that a single person could have a noticeable effect on a situation like this. People are going to do what they're going to do. Unless you want to ban going outside and actually enforce that rule, there's not a whole lot that can be done. And I actually mean that in a somewhat optimistic way. Things like this have happened before and we survived. It seems crazy now, but things get better (even if they get worse before they get better).

I have no idea what that has to do with anything. You said nothing Trump did would have made a difference, and you’re right to the extent that it wouldn’t have made a difference in China. In the United States, it would have made a very big difference..

It’s a little hard to talk about it in the United States without talking about politics.

The President of the United States is in a position of being able to exert significant influence over what happens in the United States. He has acted in ways that are dangerous to people who live in the United States. Obviously, I wish that all governments had acted responsibly, and some did not. The idea isn’t that American lives are more important, but that actions that save lives save lives, and actions that increase danger cost lives. Trump's actions are not mitigated by the failures of other leaders.

Perhaps if Trump had not treated the issue as partisan from the beginning and had focused on giving clear, accurate information along with a competent policy structure, people would believe the information they get. What he’s given instead is chaos. Having said that, you’re right, people gonna be stupid anyway. That’s no excuse for arrogant, ignorant, incompetent leadership.

I agree. Let’s let this be as apolitical a thread on the disease as possible. I will try to refrain from political comments on the disease and leave them in other threads.

That said, I can’t promise And sometimes the politics of how it is handled is important to to slowing of the spread so there may be some spillover.

On a brighter note it’s looking like the eventual mortality rate may be closer to 0.5%.

That said it’s still much higher than that in the 65 and over crowd and higher in ares where healthcare system has been temporarily overwhelmed.

It's a global pandemic. And those are countries that exist on the globe. I must be missing something here, as I'm unsure how you could think that has nothing to do with anything. Unless we're still discussing this as if the USA is the only country that exists.

This is also worrisome to me. This is a highly contagious virus. Could exist on surfaces up to nine days. And you don’t have to have any symptoms to be a carrier. People may see this and say what is the big deal? (As Trump is) and go out. Then visit their elderly parents or grandparents and they get it
