I suggested people take a step back as we weren’t likely to return until the fall. Only two out of thirty agreed with me. I was asked why and I have a few reasons. Then I made six predictions. I was only wrong about one of them, that the vaccine wouldn’t be available to the public until 2022, maybe late 2021 if we got lucky.

The rest, I pretty much nailed. But I was mocked by many colleagues (to my face and behind my back) for the rest. I don’t believe my predictions were particularly insightful either. I’m sure many others held similar thoughts at the time.

When we returned to in-school learning, people were bitching about masks. I said they better get used to them cos we’ll be wearing them a year from now. Again, I was laughed at.

Now, those that laughed the hardest also happen to be the ones who have caught COVID or not had the vaccine. Stunned I tell ya.
Yup. The ones complaining about it are why it will not end

This is unlikely to ever go away. In twenty years, I’ll tell my students about what it was like before the pandemic and they look at me in the same way they do when I say I grew up without a computer or the internet. Sheer disbelief.
I can't allow myself to believe that. I have to believe it'll be like the flu eventually, where it becomes far less deadly and is mostly in the background of our lives. I have to, or it's too much.

Forget the American idiot. We won’t see the COVID endgame until we have better global vaccine equity.

This. Covid will become like the flu at best. Annual or bi annual shots and plenty of deaths

Hmm, I mean, sure. Maybe. Probably not.

I think it's safe to say my scheduled trip to Japan and South Korea with my wife this spring is very likely not happening due to the new covid variant. Oh well, someday we'll get there. Maybe.
You wanna know what? You gotta problem with Luis Cessa, you gotta problem with me. And I suggest you let that one marinate

I literally mentioned it becoming like the flu?

Well I think this is several years away. I think many more deaths than the flu but not the waves like now

There is a pill for that … but you can’t afford it because it costs $3245 in the US.

We are making strides with that now, finally. I think the US has donated more doses than all other countries combined. It's the logistics of getting them to these deep, rural villages in the jungle or savanna - the proverbial last mile - that make things hard.

                        That, and misinformation.

I do see this eventually becoming like the flu with annual shots if you want it. I hope America becomes more like Asia with mask wearing in the winter just a normal thing. I don't hope that my daughter who started kindergarten in the 19-20 school year has to wear a mask her entire K-12 life.

So if I'm following things correctly, Republicans are simultaneously 1) suing to stop private sector vaccine mandates and wearing masks in congress 2) suggesting that Covid is a conspiracy to steal elections and 3) complaining that Biden isn’t doing enough to stop the pandemic.

Yes. And because of the election system, they will have most of the power in 18 months and all of the power in three years.

(Meanwhile, back in my home country, the POS Conservative Party is watching, taking notes and doing similar crap.)

I cannot see masks taking hold long term. When I’m out and about, anecdotally, I’d say fewer than 15% of the people i see in stores wear masks. In our town and wear I work, very few white people do. Indian, Pakistani, Chinese and Korean people do. Hispanic/Latino people do also, though a little less. Again, this is just my observation so factual research could prove me wrong.

I don’t see myself ever not wearing a mask when I’m out and about. I’ll almost certainly not stop wearing them to teach. Simply not having a cold for almost two years is a “blessing” as a teacher, let alone not getting COVID.
