COVID-19 becomes largest daily killer of Americans.
And it's going to get worse. The Hospitalizations have been going way down for the past 4 days or so but the deaths are coming from hospitalization 2-3 weeks ago. So we can be expecting the deaths to follow that prior upramp for the next 2 weeks until the decline starts.
That's for NYC, in other parts of the country the peak will differ
Make sure that her wishes are legally put in writing, medical staff must follow those instructions if they are legal. Especially now that they are saying ventilators are of little benefit, and that CPAP/BiPAP machines may offer better outcomes while being less traumatic: https://www.statnews.com/2020/04/08/...-for-covid-19/
Getting things in writing, signed and notarized, is not so easy these days. Aside from that specific piece, her wishes are clearly down on paper.
Medical staff have to follow the instructions if they’re legal and immediately available. In an emergency situation, a ventilator could well go in before I even know there’s anything happening.
My feeling is if the state government is making masks mandatory than they should also make them easily accessible to the public.
Some of the pharmacies around here have the cheap disposable ones available. Either the ones that 3/$5 or $3 each. This despite the fact that neither Duane Reade, RiteAid nor CVS, which are the largest chain drug stores around here, have any.
Despite paying monthly for insurance, I can't even get an eye exam, unless it's an emergency. If you have COVID-19, you may not be allowed to see a doctor, since you may spread it. But if you don't, but try getting into the ER, you're not sick enough to get in.

The hits keep coming. Lost an aunt from Staten Island on the other side of my family this morning, with almost identical circumstances. Was admitted to the hospital, had approximately a 2 week stay, eventually sedated due to the discomfort of intubation, her oxygen levels from the ventilator were starting to get reduced, when they tried to rouse her from sedation she was non-responsive. Since her husband passed away a little over a month ago (which I'm now curious if there was an unknown co-morbidity coronavirus aspect there), her kids / my cousins were informed last night that her odds of survival were extraordinarily low and there was a certainty that her brain function would be severely impaired if she did miraculously survive. Knowing her wishes, they were put in the heartbreaking position to have to instruct her caregivers to have her removed from the ventilator. And to do so without having a proper opportunity to say goodbye to their Mom just weeks after burying their Dad. I'm struggling with the pain of not being able to grieve with them and support them. I cannot envision the pain they are suffering right now. This is brutal. I pray for everyone's safety.
Also, a reminder to everyone that you never know what's around the corner - regardless of your age of your own perception of your health. If you have kids and want them to not be put in the gut wrenching position of answering a question like that from a doctor, a living will is important. Telling them your wishes and preferences isn't enough.
False, I'm very sorry to read this. God bless them all. R-I-P
