Re: Covid-19
Today would have been Jackie Robinson Day, with all the players wearing Mariano Rivera's number.
To honor the day, Curtis Granderson has donated 42,000 meals to Covid-19 relief.

Time for a check-in on Tropical Trump:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-h...KCN21X1QM?il=0
RASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian health officials braced on Wednesday for President Jair Bolsonaro to fire his health minister over disagreements on how to handle the coronavirus outbreak, with at least one secretary offering his resignation in protest.
In a defiant news conference, Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta acknowledged his differences with Bolsonaro and said he had discussed a search for his replacement with the presidential chief of staff.
Bolsonaro and Mandetta have been at odds over the handling of the coronavirus epidemic for weeks, as the president played down the gravity of the outbreak, touted unproven drugs and attacked governors over lockdown orders applauded by Mandetta.
“The president has made clear that he would like a different position from the Health Ministry,” Mandetta said in televised remarks. “I’m offering a way forward based on science. Outside of that, you’d have to find alternatives.”"Deep to left! Yastrzemski will not get it! It's a home run! A three-run homer by Bucky Dent! And the Yankees now lead by a score of 3-2!" - New York Yankees announcer Bill White (October 2, 1978)

The story of the 2018 clusterfest Brazilian election is a saga of craziness that leaves anyone in awe. Bolsonaro was all alone in the right-wing crazy Nazi-wannabe 'bring back military rule' faction. All the truly legit candidates ate each other up, once Lula, the former President, was ruled ineligible because of trumped-up corruption charges, got sent to jail, and his VP running
mate managed to get the other slot in the primary to compete in the run-off with Bolsonaro. He had his share of baggage and nobody liked him and the leftist Worker's Party was rife with corruption. So Jair won the general in a hold-your-nose two-choice election. This bare-bones description doesn't capture all the lunacy.

Re: Covid-19
I haven't been paying that much attention to the stimulus checks and associated parameters.
But reading up on it tonight, I'm a little confused (although not surprised, I suppose) and have at least a couple of questions.
Most people in the country still have their jobs...I think that's a fair statement. Most haven't taken a pay cut and while virtually everybody has had a level of unforeseen risk introduced into the equation in 2020 (whether it be health or financial or, most likely, both), most have their paychecks still coming in.
So....why are tens of millions of people who are still getting the same pay and still working at the same rate getting checks from the government, which, of course, borrowed the money?
Furthermore...why does a married couple earning $198,000 (or $180k or $150k, whatever) need a check from the government? I realize in some areas of the country (such as NYC and San Francisco), $198,000 isn't what it used to be and isn't what it is in Topeka, Kansas. Still, though, if you're earning $198,000, I would hope you have at least a couple of months of expenses stashed away in an emergency fund...and chances are you don't even need to access the fund anyway because the $198,000 is still coming in. On a somewhat lower end of the income scale..why does a school teacher need a stimulus check? They are making the same amount of money as they did last month and the month before that. (not picking on school teachers, they deserve every penny they get paid, just using it as an example)
I'm not trying to be heartless and cold here. I get it that there are circumstances that are unique. But it doesn't change the basic equation...

2. Not all teachers are still getting paid the same. For example, Hawaii is proposing a 20% cut across the board. It is a local decision, and I would guess that the non-union states are not paying their teachers the same as they were a few months ago. Teachers also get extra pay for things like coaching sports, After-school tutoring, home/hospital teaching, etc. Many districts have cut those extra-duty pay schedules, which would impact their monthly salary.

Re: Covid-19
I think that's a good question and it's not a simple answer. Obviously there are a lot of people that lost their job that will benefit from the extra money. There is another set that are freelancers or independent contractors that don't necessarily qualify for unemployment. Maybe you kept your job but you won't be getting that yearly bonus you count on. Or college students that are graduating and can't even look for work right now. There are people that choose not to work right now because they are high risk but that choice disqualifies them from unemployment benefits. Ideally a stimulus check like this is to boost the economy. That is unlikely right now because with restaurants, theaters, stores, etc shuttered there is not as many places to put money back in. IIRC from 2008, they said that on average, a thousand dollars in stimulus money means $250 spent on optional consumption (not necessities). There is the thought that some of that may happen with this money after the crisis but not as likely. The problem with more specific targeting based on need is it slows getting the money out and makes it more likely that a greater number of people in need will slip through the cracks. But the overall goal is to help stabilize the economy. I don't think this will be the last stimulus package. Whether or not there are more checks is debatable but there is going to have to be something if the economy is going to recover quickly.
I'm not an economist or even particularly knowledgable about this stuff so that's just my opinion based on what I've read and I may be completely misguided. I'd love for theDurk to weigh in on this as I do think it's important to understand how this all works.

Re: Covid-19
I think one reason they did an across-the-board check was simply that it was quicker and easier that way. This money was needed immediately, both for individuals and for the economy, and means testing would have sufficiently difficult, complex and time-consuming to get in the way of that. Better to means-test a tax on it a year from now if necessary.Russian warship, go **** yourself

I don't need a stimulus check (that doesn't mean I'm going to turn it down). I still have my job, and my salary, and I have enough money tucked away that I could likely retire, if I had no other options. That being said, Mrs Maynerd and I are trying to support the locally-owned restaurants and breweries. We're doing Take-Out as often as possible.......certainly much, much more frequently than we would dine out during normal times. It's a lot more expensive than preparing food at home, but those local establishments are in serious trouble, and every order helps them get to tomorrow. So, my stimulus check will do what it was intended to do. It's not going into the bank, but will go toward stimulating the local economy.
If you're still working, still drawing income, and don't have an urgent need for that money, I encourage you to spend it with the guy who's hanging on to his business by a fingernail.

Re: Covid-19
We're already taking your advice, Maynerd...as you posted a few weeks ago. Every Saturday we pick a place to get curbside delivery. We've asked everyone how they're doing through all of this, and so far they all say that business is good and things are stable. I don't know if they're being honest or reluctant to say it's not going so well. Still no open Chinese restaurants.Let the kids play.
