Dodgers do it again...We pass on the Arm in 2020 draft and Dodgers take Bobby Miller ...We draft Wells ...Miller rated a lot higher.

Oppenheimer has been awful with his first round picks except a few exceptions.

Wells wasnt a bad pick. He is 68 overall and might creep upward if he continues to hit.

Not horrible but value goes down if he isn't a catcher.

I can see the argument for wanting Miller, but Wells has like a 145 wRC+ for his minor league career, and his largest sample size this year is a 168 wRC+. It doesn't matter if he plays catcher or not, that is a big time hitting prospect, even as a DH.

Just because he's a corner guy doesn't somehow discount his bat. If he's a catcher (which is doubtful at this point) with that bat, he's a perennial MVP candidate and in the conversation for best player in baseball, so it's not like him not sticking there is a major knock.

I'm not even a huge Wells fan, but he's been an awesome pick. His minor league production has been better than 2nd overall pick, Heston Kjerstad, 5th overall pick (and "biggest steal/best hitter" of the draft), Austin Martin, and extremely similar to first overall pick, Spencer Torkelson.

I don't hate the pick and Wells has risen over many drafted before him. With that said if he doesn't stay a catcher and has to move it's a lessening of his value as a Lefty receiver. He has good wheels as a catcher so maybe he can handle a Corner spot. His value as an outfielder not What i would have gone after with a 1 pick. Wells is also at his best pulling dead red...Shifts are going to be a big obstacle to over come up here. His bat as a catcher awesome , as an OF OK. Bobby Miller was the better choice IMO and this isn't the first time the Dodgers have done this.

I love what you bring to the forum with your well-informed personal scouting and analysis - I place a good deal of value in reading your opinion, and I want to be clear that I'm not challenging that aspect of what you're saying. It's just that Wells is one of the most productive hitters in the minor leagues this season, so I'm having a tough time with the idea that his bat as an OF is just "OK". Also, the shift will be banned soon, so that's a point in his favor, no?

Wells has 236 PAs so far this year. Across every minor league level there are 933 players who have had at least 230 PAs.

                  Wells' 154 wRC+ ranks 22nd out of 933.

If you narrow it down to those mL players under the age of 23 (Wells is 22), there are 383 players across every level of the minors who have had at least 230 PAs.

                  Wells' 154 wRC+ ranks 8th out of 383.

I really hope you're wrong about his bat, because the statistical production this year has been significantly better than OK - in fact it's been truly elite.

Just remember that next year, limiting shifts will be one of the rule changes in MLB.

                      Agreed.

Right now, Well's bat, if he continues on the current trajectory, will play even as a 1B in the Major Leagues.

No Problem ...I love the Banter...I hope I'm wrong as well. Wells is a great kid and easy to root for. With that said though I'd go Miller.
