    Validation Points

I haven't been here in a while, and the forum definitely grew A LOT since I last posted regularly. The heavy traffic is great because it brings a lot of yankee fans together, but it also clogs up the forum with some less than stellar posts. This is where the validation system would help out.

For those who don't know, the v-point system allows each user to "approve" or "disapprove" of another user's post by awarding or deducting a point anonymously. You can also attach a comment to the +/- point.

People who contribute quality to the forum tend to get a lot of approval and therefore, high validation scores. People who post repetitive and inane stuff like "Agreed " usually have low scores. Neither of these things are directly awarded or criticized on the board currently, and with 13,000 members, the forum hierarchy is pretty much nonexistent. Smart, thought-out posts that are interesting to read end up lost in the fray. There are a lot of people on the board who REALLY know what they're talking about, and I enjoy reading what they post. It's unfortunate that these contributions go unrecognized.

I initially didn't like the v-point system because people could attach some nasty comments, but after seeing it in action on other sites, I came to appreciate it as a necessary evil. I'm pretty sure most vBulletin versions have it as an option, so why not give it a try?

      Re: Validation Points

I disagree. I think that a points system is just another way for people who maybe aren't the greatest minds out there feel inferior to folks that are. Speaking as one of the greatest minds on the site (top 1%, easy), I don't think it's fair to them.

I use another (non Yankees) forum where this is used...with all due respect, a very bad idea.

        Causes nothing but bad feelings.

I despise v-points. This site does not need karma whores or trolls with a license to moderate.

I find that the only feelings that are hurt, are those of people who make bad posts. And, with all due respect, that's fine by me. If you make good posts, you're celebrated. Dumb posts, hurt. Not a difficult concept.

I'm just curious if there is anyone else out there tired of one sentence postings that repeat, verbatim, precisely what the person before them posted, with the only difference being the smiley they chose. NYYF.com is no longer a small website, and I don't think Jim has to plead with people to remain faithful to the message board. What I'm getting at is that the people who don't post anything interesting, and would be deterred from posting by the points system, we can afford to lose.

Except that it doesn't allow for growth of the community. I can name PLENTY of people who joined this site, acted quite stuipd, but eventually learned not only how to express themselves, but how to contribute in many ways to the community.

In your world those people would seek a less exclusive and cliche environment elsewhere, instead of adding to our own family here.

              I'm against it.

I'm getting there. I think I'm like 6 months away. I think I've made some significant strides though.
