I think the injury history is a little overblown, presuming he clears medicals without any red flags. Yeah, he's had a few strains and sprains that have hampered him a bit. And he had TJS, but I look at that as out of the way and while he was out for TJS they took care of artho on his hip. The other injury was due to HBP. Certainly not a track record of elite physical endurance to the grinds of the job, but I don't get a strong sense of a Nick Johnson or Aaron Hicks scenario at play here either. Ultimately, let your crack medical staff weigh in on those risks.
As excited as we are about Volpe, prior to this season he wasn't even really on the radar. Volpe will be 21 next year and start in AA. Seager was the consensus #1 prospect in all of baseball going into his age 21 season at AAA, and put up a 174 OPS+ in 117 major league at bats. At age 22, he won ROY and hit playoff HRs against the likes of Max Scherzer. By the end of his 23 year old season he had already amassed >12 WAR. In his age 26 season he produced an epic NLDS and WS performance that won him MVP in each, culminating in a championship for LAD. This isn't a knock on Volpe at all, and maybe not a fair comparison either since Volpe lost a season in the minors in '20 due to Covid. But just to make the point that Seager is an amazing talent that is available squarely in his prime at a position of tremendous need for a club that needs to decide if it wants to make a run in '22 and '23. Counting on Peraza or Volpe to fill that hole is foolish if you're trying to compete now. If either of them force the Yankees hand, Cashman/Boone have proven a willingness to shift basically everyone around the infield. I'd love to have that problem.
Ideally Seager can be had for 8 years. Probably wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for him to hit FA with one more shot at a future payday for a shorter term deal at age 35. I wouldn't go 12 years, a scenario where he'd be rostered through his age 39 season. Maybe a player option for a 9th year. More than that is pushing it.Comment

The Yankees aren’t signing any big ticket free agents.
Not when they’re operating under a self-imposed salary cap.
They’ve already got $80 million a year committed to Stanton, Cole and DJ for the foreseeable future and still need to extend Judge. The Yankees are not going to commit $130 million a year on 5 players for the next 5 season.
