Would love to see Tanaka and Blake working together

    Comment

A note on Tanaka: In his last year of professional baseball in Japan before joining the Yankees, he threw 212 innings with a 1.27 ERA. Last season, he threw 155.02 innings with a 3.01 ERA. Also, in his last 3 full seasons with the Yankees (2017, 2018, 2019) Tanaka threw 516.1 innings with a 4.34 ERA.

I would say that price and opportunity cost have to be looked at very carefully when making this decision.

If you want to make drastic changes to the ways guys pitch, do it at an appropriate time. The offseason.
Word. That's my absolute POV as well. He owns it on two fronts. Ignoring the issue completely is the equivalent of tacit approval. Then, to try to make up for the stupid overcorrection deadening the balls had on offense, in mid-season you crack down on this?

        Manfred is a joke.

I feel like someone will get the "Kluber 2021" deal from the team. Maybe Kluber signs another one year deal, or some other veteran looking to reestablish. I hadn't thought of Tanaka but seems like someone they could target if he'd do a one year deal.

If the choice were between Kluber and Tanaka on a 1-year deal, I think I might lean towards Tanaka because (despite the known elbow issue), Tanaka is much more likely to give the team a complete season.

Tanaka of those two for sure, just realize he is more or less a #4 these days.
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, when they said "sit down" I stood up.

Yea, the funny thing is I think Tanaka would've faired quite well in 2021 with a deader ball than he was seeing his past several years in the majors. But we have no clue what Manfred is going to do. Tanaka is the safer bet though to give us quality innings between him and Kluber and I think Kluber's upside is a bit diminished now as he's clearly a former Cy Young at this point of his career.

I'd toss Carlos Rodon's name in there as a candidate for that 1-year deal. He's a high upside option as is someone like Verlander if Cole was recruiting him. If Hal is not willing to spend big or spend long term we'll have to take some gambles and these might be worth it even if these deals haven't really worked out for us in the past.

I'd personally spend a little more on a long term deal for someone like Eduardo Rodriguez or a lot more on a shorter term deal for Scherzer as both guys can be relied on for innings and big innings, but not my money.

Just don't sign Robbie Ray. There's no reason to take that kind of downside risk on the type of deal he'll get plus he choked in that last start against us with their season on the line.

A trade with the Twins could make a lot of sense. Mitch Garver would be an ideal replacement for Sanchez. He's a good framer and a high upside bat. The Twins also need pitching and have a young catcher in Ryan Jeffers to take over where they might be intrigued by something including a guy like Clarke Schmidt, German or a few other prospects.

And while we're there worth it to kick the tires on Buxton. I know his injury history is scary especially considering every OFer on the team except Gallo is an injury risk, but when he's healthy he's an elite player in a premium position so might be worth the risk especially since it would make a guy like Hicks (also an injury risk) a backup where he belongs and you've also got Judge/Gallo and Florial as backup options. Twins may hang onto him waiting for a time to maximize his value, but they could also look to rebuild/re-tool since they've so far failed to sign him long term. Could see the Twins having some interest in some of the Yankee castoffs as Voit could slide into the DH spot vacated by Cruz. They might have some interest in depressed assets like Andujar or Frazier if the Yankees pay some of the salary. Of course none of those guys would be key pieces in these deals, we would have to include some of the 2nd tier prospects in the system so guys like Medina, Gil, Wells, Sweeny, maybe still Deivi or take on Donaldson's salary.

Both are righty bats, but you could balance out the lineup by prioritizing Rizzo, Freeman or Seager in FA. Or keep dealing and nab either JRam or Olson.

After reading the article on MLBtraderumors I don't believe the Yankees will sign Seager or Correa. Including the arbitration estimates Cots and fangraphs have the payroll at around 221 million before the Yankees do anything. Maybe you can cut 15 million off if they non-tender or trade Sanchez and Voit. You are still at 205ish million before making one move. You sign Correa for 33 million AAV and you are at 238 million already before getting another catcher or pitcher. That also is without an upgrade in CF. I don't expect the Yankees to have a payroll north of 250 million especially when they are going to have to pay Judge 30 million a year starting in 2023.

Are they still trying to stay under with the tax? I thought last year was about resetting the penalty.

My expectations for this offseason are super low. The only thing I'm still hopeful of and rooting for is for Sanchez to be shown the door. I don't even care who replaces him.

The new CBA will determine what the threshold will be going forward. TBD.

I want Correa, damn the cost. He just turned 27 and he’s really, really good. The Yankees need a shortstop - not just a guy yu play to the left of 2b - and with Urshela, Correa, and LeMahieu they’ve suddenly got killer defense. He fis this team perfectly.

Snitker is old but not manages in old school way. An old school manager wouldn't pull a starter who was having a no-no after the 5th innings at 76 pitches.
