People complain about the CBS years but they unfortunately bought a team that the previous owner had pretty much allowed to die. No free agency so you could not improve the team that way and the amateur draft starting in 1965 made it impossible to just sign the best prospects. But through the lean years the Yankees had Ralph Houk as the manger and a very capable GM in Lee McPhail. And by the early 70s they had turned the team around. Of course George buying the team made things a lot better too.

barring a trade though it looks like he will be the Yankees everyday 2B next year so I hope he returns to 280+ hitter who can give you 25 HRs and 15 Sbs.Baseball is life;
the rest is just details.

Judge, Stanton, DJ, Torres are a good start. They should try to retain Rizzo (cost effectively) and Gallo the same. They need to move Sanchez, Urshela, Hicks for whatever they can get.
The infield could be Rizzo, Torres, Velazquez, DJ (around the horn)
Need to acquire a catcher & a centerfielder. I realize CFers don't grow on trees. And I'm not exactly sure what they have in the minors either.
They also need starting pitchers. Enough of trying to play the "Ray game". Be the Yankees for cryin out loud.

Same thing with starting rotation. Winning the most regular season games requires depth (good 1-5) that can give you distance and aren't injury prone so the bullpen doesn't get burned out. Not so much with the playoffs.
A higher percentage of runs in the post season come from the longball than in the regular season.
They design is clearly for the post season. It's just a craptastic execution and they're poorly built. That doesn't mean they're built for the regular season. I mean, they won 91 games at a time when the league's CY Young winner has a near 3.00 ERA. The AL is about as weak as it's ever been and they're the 4th best in their division with the highest payroll, lol. They're just poorly built.
It's like looking at some redneck jimmy-rigged lifted truck, watching it fall apart predictably and catastrophically, to the point of amusement, the first time it sees a bump offroad and saying "it isn't built for offroading- it's built for speed." No, it's not good for anything. That's what the yankees are. No part of their game is elite.Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? Cashman: Ronald Torreyes. He’s an analytical darling.

My guess: stop gap at SS, possibly a new first baseman and Catcher. Outfield is set with Gallo/Hicks/Judge/Gardner. Rotation largely set with Severino taking Kluber's spot. Bullpen largely set although that won't stop Cashman from unnecessarily over investing in that area while not addressing holes in the rotation and lineup.Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? So with the decision to come back completely up to Gardner, that means Stanton is back to full time DH right? Even though when Tauchman was the 5th OFer, he got zero playing time, when it is Gardner he will spell Gallo, Hicks, and Judge each twice a week and basically be a full time starter.
