The only thing I can think of is Olson will require a decent haul in talent to acquire, whereas Rizzo will cost only money. But Olson's cost control would allow the Yankees to invest in FA for other needs. I like Rizzo, but like Olson significantly more.

what do you all think of Kurt Suzuki?
I will sum up my thoughts on Suzuki with this quote: "I actually think the time is right for 'Secretariat,' so what do you want to play, like, Secretariat's dad or his grandfather, maybe like an elderly witch doctor who puts a curse on him or something?"

I don’t understand your quote but I’ll take it as a no vote.

Completely agreed but “Costs only money” doesn’t even make sense anymore. Not when $80 million a year is already tied up in Cole, Stanton and DJ for the next 5 years + another $25-30 million a year to extend Judge + the expectation they sign a high-end free agent SS. That brings payroll up to at least $135 million a year just on 5 players. Signing Rizzo on top of that makes no sense. Making matters worse, virtually all of those contracts are untradeable. It isn’t realistic or sustainable for a team that operates under a self-imposed salary cap every couple of years.

On the other hand, they’re facing a roster crunch and would be wise to trade multiple prospects to acquire a young, cost-controlled player such as Olson who fills multiple needs. And it’s not like the Yankees have a great track record in developing prospects in the first place.

I'd prefer using tradable prospects for someone like a CF Reynolds instead of a 1B Olson. Again, and maybe you can correct me on this (is it?) misreading, but aside from this past year, Olson's BA is in the .250s, which is what Rizzo hit for us and Cubs on his age-downward slope. True, Olson may be coming into his prime, so to speak, and he does hit for power compared with someone like Gardner (also in the 250ish lifetime BA bracket). On the other hand, I'm not sure what Rizzo will be asking, though. If it's too much, let him go. Still, I prefer Reynolds patrolling CF for us for years, but he's out of reach unless we use our better prospects to get the Pirates to the table.

I really like Bryan Reynolds and how well he would fit on this Yankee club.

I'm not very informed re: how the Pirates are building for the future, but my guess is Reynolds is the kind of guy they should be building around - not trading. I think the Yanks would have to overpay just for the Pirates to pick up the phone.

Personally I'd rather overpay for an Olson/Manaea package than for just Reynolds.

Interesting week coming up with the friday deadline looming to add prospects to the 40 man roster. Guys like Breaux, Vasquez, Cabrera and Pereira all need to get protected.

I honestly wonder why Hal hasn't sold the team. Just go put the billions in the market and enjoy the checks in the mail.
Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? Cashman: Ronald Torreyes. He’s an analytical darling.

I was watching a Yankee news channel on YouTube and the host was saying the pirates have a bunch of guys are close to the majors and could be pieces around Reynolds.

Reynolds is my number one choice but Dominguez or volpe would have to be in the deal, I would trade Dominguez - not sure about volpe.

im assuming they won’t give up either so Olsen makes sense

I would like to see Reynolds put up the numbers like he did last year again before trying to deal for him. Too many guys have this one really good or monster season and then fizzle out.

Not saying he would do that, but don't want to give up top prospects and then end up with a mediocre player.

Owning the Yankees is a market beating investment.

Good move for Detroit. Glad he's out of Boston. Bummed the Yankees didn't get on this (contract pending). I think ERod was one of the safest investments in this FA class as a stable #3 (or #2) type that you could plug into a playoff rotation with relative confidence.

He did his rookie year though. The only blip on his radar was the shortened 2020 season.
