Seems a bit light. If you figure he is worth 5 WAR now, that's about $40M per. Given his age and expected decline (.3 WAR until 32, .7 WAR after) you'd think...

    2022 - $40M
    2023 - $37.6M
    2024 - $32M
    2025 - $26.4M
    2026 - $20.8M
    Total - $156.8M

    To me that is fair.

Any premium you want to pay above that out of need would start from there. I'd say his AAV over 5 years or $167M/5 is a good final resting place.

I expected 5 or 6 years and about 150 total.
+$33M/yr doesn't make any sense for that long, considering he's going to 37 and 38 for almost $67M worth of salary. $33M/yr makes sense for like.. a 4 year deal.
Honestly, $26M a year for 5 year at that age is pretty reasonable IMO. I think 5/150 is a good deal, 6/165 is probably fair to both.
Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? Cashman: Ronald Torreyes. He’s an analytical darling.

I don’t doubt his production justifies that kind of contract. But, if you were in Cashman’s spot knowing Atlanta’s offer, would you come in with the terms you outlined? I wouldn’t, personally. If an Olson trade doesn’t work, I’d almost prefer a shorter Rizzo deal. And I don’t really want Rizzo.

Cashman- "We really took a run at Freeman but in the end he preferred to stay with the Braves" . But there are always other options.

I think it'll be more like "we did our due diligence, but we're not going to be "used" by Freeman's agent to drive his price up for the Braves"

Freeman's a great player, but as you say, there are other options.....

Am I crazy for being hesitant on Olson? I know he has two arbitration years left, but I hate the idea of paying him over 20 mil a year when the time comes when this team seems so concerned about payroll

I'm interested in Olson because the Yanks would be getting him in his prime - he could be better than he is now, even!

I tried to establish what was fair and a final outcome. I didn't mention first offer.

But if you are asking me what I would do if I were Cashman? Keep Voit.

The team has more pressing needs than a backup 1B/DH.

This, plus his salary gives Cashman the financial flexibility to make additional upgrades that likey are not be possible if you sign Freeman or Rizzo.

They have more pressing needs than Cashman's ego, but here we are with the 2020 HR champion and the third best hitter on the team on the bench.

I’ll take Olson and I really dont want Rizzo. We could be looking at 20 Hrs and 75 rbi at first and 15 and 60 from Gio at third. Not the corner production im looking for.

Declining veterans isn't what this team needs.

I can't see how Voit remains on the team unless they're unloading OF that force Stanton into LF.
