There was definitely room for Harper in this lineup - was/is literally a perfect LH fit and would have certainly changed the outcome in 2019.
machado made way more sense.
neither or Torres or Andujar could play the infield and they both had high trade value. Frazier should have been gone with them to bring in top flight pitching.Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? Cashman: Ronald Torreyes. He’s an analytical darling.

...They won't but at least my dreams are dying later than yours.
I also worry about calling the SS need a stop gap situation. Prior to last season, I think most people were expecting Volpe to be another massive overreach in terms of draft position. Most were trashing that selection prior to this year. His season was amazing at Hudson Valley, but it was Hudson Valley. This isn't an 18 year old can't miss A-Rod, or even a 20 year old can't miss Corey Seager. I think for a team with a very short window, you don't pass on elite FA SS talent because you had a surprisingly good season in High A ball. Peraza's nice too, and closer to being ready, but no sure thing. Add the elite talent to your roster, try to push the window back open, and then if Volpe or Peraza forces your hand you can leverage SS, 3B and 2B to create openings for young talent

So free agents are starting to come off the board and the Yankees haven’t started recruiting. What has Cashman been working on the last 7 weeks?

And stop gap doesn't necessarily mean I belive the prospects will take over. It just means I don't want to hand out 10 year contracts to middle IFers. The Yankees can't really hand out ANY more contracts like that for a while. They have too many of them right now. Cole was the last because they viewed him as the finishing piece. This roster would be unworkable in 5 years on the back end of too many long term contracts. Semien on a 4 or maybe 5 year is the most I would go a SS.
They have enough holes to plug they can improve without a $300M+ decade long contract.

And Verlander was plenty good before sticky stuff was even a thing and guys like Charlie Morton who turned their career around in Houston have been fine on other teams without sticky stuff too. Cole was always the poster boy for it. Not saying Verlander didn't touch it, but there's less evidence to suggest his results were driven by substances.
Verlander may be the last pitcher we ever see throw 3000 career innings pitched (he's 12 innings away). Scherzer needs 3 more seasons to have a chance given he's at 2536.2. I can't imagine anyone else ever getting up there maybe Cole (almost halfway there) if we get REALLY lucky. So yes pitchers in their late 30's are not guys you want to take injury risks on, but if you were going to do it for anyone Verlander is a unique case. He's not Corey Kluber who had a streak of 5 excellent years of 200+ innings before his body broke down.
In an offseason when Heaney gets 8.5M from a WS contender, Syndergaard gets 22M, the 25M JV just got doesn't look so bad by comparison. I'm happy for the Yankees to look elsewhere (trades primarily), but if you were going to take a shot on a short term deal and weren't willing to pay the extra for Scherzer who has been healthy, there were worse gambles to take, by far.

Hal Steinbrenner being quoted as supporting lowering the Luxury Tax threshold should be alarming to Yankees fans. Cashman should not be the GM going forward, but Yankees fans, a bigger problem is we might have an owner that shouldn't own the team going forward.
It appears that NYC sports franchises across the different sports all have one common denominator which is bad ownership. That's the worst thing to happen to any fanbase.NYYFANS: See you on the other side!

This does not bode well long-term. Our GM hasn't been able to succeed without a huge payroll advantage and the owner cares more about his bottom line than winning (and honestly I'm not convinced he's any good at maximizing profits either!).
All of these billionaire owners are awful.
