- Lopez is a fine SS but not a game changer like some of the FA targets; if they are going to potentially block their own highly touted SS in the system I wouldn't do it unless for someone of Correa's / Seager's caliber.
- Aside from Schmidt and to a lesser degree Wells, the players going to the Royals have depreciated value; I would think if the Royals wanted to move a very good shortstop, one of their top prospects who happens to be a LH hitting C who put up a >1 OPS between AA and AAA and is strong defensively, and their closer they could probably get a better deal elsewhere.
1 I love a guy like Melendez as a target. Wells and one of German/Gil/Schmidt/Medina?
2. What the Yankees are giving up here is likely too little
More broadly, I'd prefer that we use our assets to get up and coming players versus established stars (eg, maybe a guy like Abrams from the Padres). I also wouldn't mind if we just rolled the dice on Peraza/Volpe/Cabrera/Urshela as our options for next year at SS versus risk a long term albatross contract 3+ years down the road (although Cashman's comments will make it hard for the fan base to feel good about this)

I think the Yankees probably have the 2nd or maybe 3rd highest payroll in all of MLB over the last 5 or 10 years. I don't get this critique of their "small market approach". To me, it's just wise to try to optimize your payroll whether it's $50M or $250M. I expect their 2022 payroll to be about $250M barring some strange CBA outcome - if that's their number, I hope they spend it as wisely as possible, with consideration of the short term and long term (since my plan is to be a Yankee fan not just in 2022 but for many years beyond that).

Man, it sure hurts being a Yankee fan these days.
Michael Conforto is an interesting option for the Yankees OF now. Curious what his market looks like after the down year. I’d feel great about him in LF, Gallo in CF, Judge in RF.
Cedric Mullins who the O’s are apparently listening on is even more interesting, great fit for the Yankees checks all the boxes (lefty, speed, defense, young, cost controlled), wouldn’t hesitate to deal a package led by Volpe, but think it might be too steep if they also asked for the Martian. Although you’d have to consider it especially if you felt Mullins will definitely sustain his or build on his 2021 performance

It's not a terrible signing but I don't love Marte at that price.
Apparently, Mullins is also being made available. He is someone I wanted back in May 2020 but not now. I believe in buying low and selling high. Getting Mullins now would require buying high IMO.
So far, my favorite trade candidates are probably Jose Ramirez or a very strong catcher or SS prospect who is blocked at the big league level.
My favorite free agent options include Suzuki, maybe Baez (or even Story), maybe another run at Kluber (which would likely make some Yankee fans' heads explode),....
On the sell side, I'd like to see us move on from Sanchez, Aroldis (eating 2ish M), Miggy, and possibly Gleyber and/or German (depending on their current value). I don't want to move on from Hicks or Voit (who I think are better than they seem to be currently valued).
I'd also like to see us pursue extensions or trades for guys approaching free agency (Taillon, Judge, Chad Green, maybe Monty (for an extension),...).
Should be a fascinating offseason.

Judge will, at age 31 if they don’t extend him soon, want a contract way after his age 36 season.
