I dont know a whole lot about these players, but what am I missing?

IKF and Rortvedt are really bad hitters.

IKF is 2021 Gardner level offense (slightly worse).

Rortvedt, while he's only 21 with a small sample size, makes the 2021 Gardner, Frazier, Wade, Oror, Andujar, Torres, Gio, etc look like Mike Trout. His OPS+ was 41. 41! The difference between Gardner and Rotvedt is like the difference between Gardner and Judge. That's not a hyperbole. They're about 50 OPS+ points apart. I dont expect him to hit that poorly, but nothing about his minor league stats make you think he will have any offense either.

And they added $14M of payroll in all of this?

Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? Cashman: Ronald Torreyes. He’s an analytical darling.

Cashman is going to roll out a starting lineup that includes Stanton, Hicks, Judge, Donaldson, and Rizzo, and a rotation that is highly dependent upon Severino and Taillon, and then blame injuries when the team struggles.

I wouldn't blame the deals themselves, as they looked pretty reasonable at the time. It's more that good players seem to regress when they join this organization.

Josh Donaldson had the 5th-highest wRC+ among 3B in 2021. He was a better offensive player than Manny Machado, Kris Bryant, Yoan Moncada, Nolan Arenado, and Matt Chapman. Now hes in a better ballpark.

IKF is a better fielder and hitter than Didi was when he was on the Diamondbacks. He is on the upswing.

Everything about Donaldson screams 'bad fit'. Another aging injury-prone RH strikeout machine, who happens to have bad blood with the best starting pitcher.

The roster just doesn't make sense as is. Playing DJL @ 1B or 3B, just makes no sense at all. Playing Gleyber at 2B ruins the defense. Cashman has got a lot more to fix.
It's like a 10 year old assembled a fantasy team of his favorite players, and the fantasy team has no position/defense requirements.

Unless he's planning on trading Hicks, Torres, Voit and/or Andujar and acquiring a solid 1B and CF (or, *gasp* letting Stanton play the damn field), it will remain a mess of completely unoptimized players.
And that doesn't even get into the ration that consists for 5/5 pitchers being either massive performance question marks, massive injury risks or both. Except maybe Cortez. He's probably a pretty darn solid #5 that can even be a #4. Congrats, you got a reliable #5 pitcher on your $240 payroll.

IKF had the 8th highest WARP in baseball at 4.2. For reference, Bichette was at 3.6, Anderson 3.1, Seager 2.5.

He had 172 hits last year, which would have been highest on the 2021 Yankees. So he's got a hit tool, which is the hardest tool to actually develop. Patience and power are much easier developed.

I don't know if I'd call it a failure, but it's definitely uninspiring. That's what I meant when I said things were already back to normal - they're spending big money on a fully loaded Accord with aftermarket work done, and then acting surprised that it doesn't get them luxury car attention. When your rich friend keeps making those types of decisions, you can't help but shake your head and say, "dude, just buy the Benz."

That's great...if he plays 3rd. He only started 91 games at 3rd because of injury problems. He started at DH 34 times.

Then why did the Rangers make it a priority to spend that much and sign Seager?
Why was he traded to the Yankees for so little?

Higher upside? New stadium? Team control? Are the Twins and Rangers model franchises? I mean teams do dumb things all the time, including ours. I just don't think this is one of them in isolation.

Rangers have been to 2 World Series since the Yankees last won a pennant....

If the Yankees land Olson, a better catcher, and upgrade the rotation I won't care about Kiner-Falefa being the SS. The problem is I have no faith in the Yankees "going for it" and making all those moves.

Kiner-Falefa is a glove 1st player that does not get on base and does not slug much. He can run a little and slaps the ball around.

In all of this, the Gallo trade might be the biggest steal now that the shift is off.
