I fully understand managing the roster and payroll with the CBT in mind as it relates to near-term and long-term opportunities. But it should not be an absolute barrier. It should involve a lot of strategy and nuance. Hal needs to stop treating his product as a cash cow.
They should not be "managing down" to the CBT while they have a roster with a window of contention. In 2017, when even Yankee haters would have said that this team has a multi-year window to take legit swings at multiple WS, they had a 40 man payroll of $224MM. In spite of adding Stanton and Cole since then, and creating opportunity through eliminating dead weight like Ellsbury, in 2021 their 40 man payroll was $207MM, nearly 10% lower than when the window was opened. In those four seasons the window has begun to shut.
They have reset the tax now. There are young, elite FAs available at positions of immediate need. Hal is making money hand over fist, pumping the lowest % of revenues back on the field in the game. Time to spend, and to allow BETTER SPENDING (e.g. stop re-signing players' corpses, stop overspending on names for the bullpen, etc) and a productive farm system to help you bring the payroll down over time after you've rebuilt your core.
If you're going to let the CBT be a hard cap on spending, then blow this roster up, start over, bring in new leaders and change the entire operating model.

Here is a quote from an article he wrote about whether Cashman will be back that was posted 9/17/21 on the SNY site: "Yankees fans are right to yearn for more championships. But those accustomed to their team being relevant every year might be in for a rude surprise if Cashman and his group ever leaves. That’s what they’ve given you."

This should be pinned to the top of this thread.
To your point, the winter of 2018 is a perfect example of refusing to strike when the iron was hot. How much better could this team have been with Bryce Harper or Manny Machado?"Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever." - Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821)
