The Times article today mentioned his decade long friendship with Crane. Pebble Beach trips and charity events.
I think Crane really wanted a Prominent hire to move away from the scandal.

Going back to post on Torres (at 2nd). A post had Torres wRC at 84. The post was right. I watch and we all saw our SS was a problem. I am NOT saying it wasn't - it was big. Brian was too stubborn to move him because of his plan to have DJ at 2nd.... Now he is going to sign an expensive SS (his top priority). The move to 2nd (we all wanted) was September 13th (that is not a mistake that is negligence, that's Cashman and Boone job.) After the move our SS position went from 84 wRC to 111 (better) and Torres at 2nd went from 89 to 124 (nice). Play Urshela and Volpe at SS and Torres at 2nd. This works with 19 games. WE sucked at SS because Torres was out of position (108 game at SS and 19 games at 2nd). We have bigger problems. We need to get a starting catcher because he is terrible. His only spot is DH but BA is the Mendoza Line.... We watch the games don't listen to the FO BS Like what we read with Boone's contract.

I am not sure of the improvement at SS after we moved Torres maybe Wade and Velaquez, 19 games, my dates, using the splits with SS, so I looked at Ursela after we moved Torres to 2nd and his wRC is 133 (nice) which is better too. I watch the games and they looked good at SS and 2nd.

If I was placing bets on FA SS's to be Yankees next year Simmons for me is the most likely. Cashman has always loved him, tried to get him in multiple trades including reportedly at this deadline. Plus the timing is perfect for Cashman as its is clearly several years too late. And the justification will be that they've got Torres at 2B, DJ moving over to 3B, Urshela splits time with Simmons at SS and with DJ at 3B who will also see time at 2B and 1B.

Also I have to assume Cashman will chase Simmons and Story because Seager and Correa are the guys that actually make sense.

I understand that Cashman is this forum's boogeyman for everything that has changed or gone badly for the Yankees, but I'm not sure you can blame him for Jackson moving on.

I think Hal and Cashman realizes they have to make a big splash this offseason as the spotlight has clearly brighten quite a bit regarding their team's regression. I expect them to go after one of the better SS this winter.
