They refuse to use that power. Astros had virtually the same payroll and have barely more than half the revenue of the Yankees.

Lol, man, Hal really knows how to shake things up and send a message. He's must have some real fire in his belly to (checks notes) fire the 1st and 3b coaches.
Yankees are going to have a lot of potential assistant coaches lining up to be their next scape goats this offseason. How can we not expect the best? I 100% wouldn't put it past Cashman to hire people he could easily blame.

Being a Yankee coach is a little like being one of the crew members in the red tunics on the original Shatner "Star Trek." Usually those poor guys got turned into sugar cubes by the first commercial.

That’s so funny, particularly for us “old(er) folks.

Right. And let Hicks replace Gardner as 4th OF. Given all the coaching vacancies, it's a good opportunity for his loyalist Cashman to DFA Gardner and turn him into a 3rd or 1B coach. Anything to get him out of the daily line-up..

Olson just had a season that Rizzo would have been proud of 7 years ago in his prime. Olson is 5 years younger than Rizzo, who appears to have gone from great to good at this stage of his career. If there's some better value they can get by trading the right chips, I'm not opposed to Rizzo. But for example if signing Rizzo meant not signing an elite SS, they should spend the money without hesitation on the elite SS and invest the talent capital in Olson.
We’re 100% on the same page. I’ve always been a strong proponent of building through the farm system but seeing how this organization repeatedly fails in this area, I’m open to trading anyone in the system not named Jasson or Volpe. Olson checks all the checkboxes and their window is now.

I really don’t like the idea of signing Marte for CF. He’s at an age and plays a position where decline is imminent, making it a bad deal in the back-end. I’d much prefer that they seek younger talent for that position.

Have not posted here, just finished the entire thread,

All I can say there is trouble in River City and I do not have any answers.

We are short of talent at key positions, right up the middle.

Our owner doesnt seem to be in major spend mode...I mean major

Our farm system is in the middle

Our GM is weak but is beloved by ownership

My conclusion is ths is an unsolvable problem it must get worse bef it gets better.

It’s a sad comment on the state of the Yankees when the Star Trek reference of Hello Newman about being a Yankee coach is the first baseball related thing that made me smile this offseason!!

Doesnt seem that Wells is theanswer

Here is MLB Pipeline’s scouting report on Wells:

Though Wells is a shaky receiver with a below-average arm and elbow problems that began in high school, the Yankees are impressed with the initial work he’s done with their instructors remotely. They believe he can add enough polish to stay behind the plate, but scouts outside the organization believe he’ll follow the Kyle Schwarber path and wind up in left field or first base. He runs well enough to handle the outfield and could maximize his offensive production at a less demanding position than catcher.

So the Yankees are going to pay Seager/Correa 250 million plus, extend Judge for 30 plus million a year, carry Cole at 36 million a year, carry Stanton at 26 million AAV, and then invest the prospects it takes to land Olson who is on his last year of arbitration next season? So are you going to trade some decent prospects for him and then let him walk or are the Yankees going to pay him 25-30 million a year as well and have a 300 million dollar payroll every year the next 6-8 years? Seems... unrealistic to say the least.
My personal opinion is if they are not willing to do all the things you list and more, they should blow this current roster up and do a complete rebuild. To me, the thing that makes sense about Olson is that, yes, they are going to HAVE to spend money to bring on FA talent. There's no getting around that if they truly want to compete in the next few seasons. Olson still has two years of cost control until free agency. He's an elite player that doesn't get paid like one right now. Marry him up with some high AAV elite talent and go to war. Or, stop keeping one foot on the dock and one on the boat and hit the reset button.

Starling Marte is a great fit with solid D and basestealing, which this team lacks, but his age and PED past scares me. I would prefer we trade for the younger Marte (Ketel). KMarte has had his issues on defense, but he is relatively young, a switch hitter, doesn't strike out much, and hits for a high BA. He is under control for 2 more years like Olson and was rumored to be available midseason before injury. Getting him and Olson will hurt the farm, but getting those two bats at relatively low salaries will let us go after a big bat at SS to round out lineup.

Cash man said we need more contact hitters. My dream would be to sign freeman (impossible), sherzer, and take a flyer on verlander. This would give us some really firepower and we still have plenty of this years guys to fill in when those guys get injured or need rest.

If by take a flyer on Verlander you mean offering him a controlled workout (with no sticky stuff) and a battery of medical tests, and then basically giving him a Kluber-ish deal to take his spot? Maybe. But they'd really be gambling if they offered him a higher AAV especially if he's commanding a multi-year deal.
