Regarding the passage I put in bold: I can understand, 100%, how one could charge Cashman with a failure of judgment. But this seems to go over the mark and to charge him with malicious intent.

Sherman has an article on how he would fix the lineup in the NY Post...

Can someone summarize what he said as it is a premium article?

Yes, I'm wondering what Cashman told him to write as well.
Brian Cashman: "I have no idea."

Astros owner said they will likely give Verlander a qualifying offer. So your plan is out for a "Kluber-ish deal". He also said Verlander wants a multiyear deal.

"Malicious intent" is a little strong ... A lot of bosses feel the organization works better if the underlings are just props to be used in the service of the boss, however the boss deems necessary. I think it's an incredibly arrogant and self destructive way to run things, but I wouldn't call it malice.

I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, when they said "sit down" I stood up.

Stay away from Verlander now that he's without sticky stuff. Aging veterans don't just magically find speed, spinrate and command in their mid 30s. Hopefully, they learned that lesson from Cole.
Q: Who’s the guy on your roster that would have been overlooked if not for analytics? Cashman: Ronald Torreyes. He’s an analytical darling.

Does anyone have access to Sherman's "one trick mess" article?

But the Astros have baseball players, we have a roster full of Adam Dunn.

                    Joel's 1st base options(It's free)

What he called the “dream” option is Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. The 31-year-old will be a free agentafter the World Series. But chances are the Braves re-sign the 2020 National League MVP.

Up next is for Sherman is Oakland A’s slugger Matt Olson. The 27-year-old set career highs with 39 home runs 111 RBI this season, and he’s under team control through 2023. But, and this is a big but, Olson would require a trade to change teams.

Failing on those two fronts, Sherman said “the Yanks can do far worse than retaining Rizzo’s high-contact bat and defense.”

After coming over from the Chicago Cubs before the July 30 trade deadline, the 32-year-old Rizzo hit .249 with eight home runs in 49 games. His Gold Glove defense and ability to take advantage of the short porch in right field make him a natural fit for the Yankees. But Rizzo will be looking for a nine-figure contract and Sherman thinks the Yankees might be better off signing a big-name free-agent shortstop like Houston AstrosCarlos Correa.

If Cashman goes 0-for-3, Sherman thinks he can fall back on DJ LeMahieu and/or Joey Gallo. One thing that’s clear is Sherman doesn’t think Voit is part of the solution.

Voit cannot be on a team that has a primary DH such as Giancarlo Stanton. The NL likely will have a DH next year, though a collective bargaining agreement that brings that change probably will not be in place by Dec. 1. So trading Voit will not be easy and a non-tender might be in play.

Sherman also believes it’s time for the Yankees to move on from Clint Frazier and Gary Sanchez.

Cashman made it very clear earlier this week he is ready to reshape the roster for 2022. Whether he follows Sherman’s suggestions remains to be seen.

My plan isn't out actually, I don't want to sign him at all, particularly not for a multi-year deal. At his age, with 6 IP under his belt since 2019, with no post-sticky-stuff history, I'd let someone else take that risk. If he could be had on similar terms that Kluber accepted, I could live with that risk if his workouts/medicals were solid. But ultimately I'd rather they find a better solution.

If the Yankees non-tender Voit that will be gross negligence.

I like Olson. It’s possible with his projected arbitration number of $12mil for 2022 the A’s won’t be able to retain him. May have to consider trading him.

Fair point. To clarify I wouldn't say its a primary intent and that he's doing it maliciously against the team's best interests. I think Cashman is always thinking about the narrative in a variety of different outcomes with self-preservation and Hal-preservation key priorities for him and the organization in all scenarios. Assistant coaches are public figures and have a role in that narrative both positive and negative and at least arguably in many cases potentially a greater role in narratives than they do in actual outcomes. So do I think Cashman at least back of mind considers if this is a person he could pin a negative narrative on if things do not work as planned, yes. I'm not accusing him of doing it maliciously in a way to set anyone up for failure though, but I do think he thinks about that thing when he makes a hire. He could easily say its performance objectives and no one would call him on it, but performance and perception are different things and I do feel like he's thinking about both.

Here is MLB Pipeline’s scouting report on Wells:

Though Wells is a shaky receiver with a below-average arm and elbow problems that began in high school, the Yankees are impressed with the initial work he’s done with their instructors remotely. They believe he can add enough polish to stay behind the plate, but scouts outside the organization believe he’ll follow the Kyle Schwarber path and wind up in left field or first base. He runs well enough to handle the outfield and could maximize his offensive production at a less demanding position than catcher.
Cashman sure loves those poor fielding catchers.
