    2021 Chad Green Performance Thread

He has the most games pitched on the Yankees, but he didn't have a topic until now. After starting 0-4, he's won his last two appearances including a scoreless inning and win yesterday. His 35 1/3 innings are second in the bullpen to Loaisiga's 37.

He became the third pitcher from 1901 to the present to pitch at least 3 relief innings to end a game or 9 or fewer innings after his team's starter pitched fewer than 5 innings, get a win, not allow any baserunners, and have at least 6 strikeouts. All three times were in New York, and two times including today the Yankees won 4-2. The only previous Yankee to do that was Steve Hamilton on May 21, 1966. Cincinnati's Don Gullett did that on August 23, 1970 in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Shea when the losing pitcher was Tom Seaver.

I wonder when was the last time a pitcher threw an immaculate inning to finish the game.

It's happened several times in the last decade, about 10. Most recently before yesterday was March 30, 2019 during the Brewers win over the Cardinals. Overall, about 100 times since good records were kept, but over various innings.
Didn’t happen last year, probably due to 60 game season.

He lost to fall to 7-6. If he doesn't start any games, he will be the ninth Yankee to have a season with at least 7 wins, at least 6 losses, and no starts. The last Yankee to do that was Lee Guetterman in 1990. All of the Yankees who did it before Green and Guetterman had at least 19 saves.

I'm beginning to think Green is best-used in the 5th & 6th innings.

I'm so spoiled by Mo Rivera still, I'm so used to meltdowns only happening once in a blue moon, when in reality most relievers probably melt down much more regularly.

            What a tough role to fill. When you're successful, you're a hero - when you're not.....you're a bum.

When his secondary stuff isn't either shown or effective, Green and his plus fastball becomes total batting practice. I remember when he was so awful he got demoted a few years back. Luckily he's generally been better, but BP Green resurfaces now and then.

He's got to be getting close to a ML record for late inning ineptitude... hasn't he?

He's in line right now for his 15th decision in 75 appearances. That seems really high.

                    60 appearances.

I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, when they said "sit down" I stood up.

I think right now it would be wise to have Chad "open" a few games and pitch about 2-3 innings each time. If he gives up gopher balls, at least the yanks have time to come back. Maybe open for Cortes?

That is a pretty good idea but I would not do it for Nestor because if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yeah, I grabbed innings count, not appearance. Thanks for the correction. Derp.

This makes it even more interesting though. If not for a bloop single by Brett Gardner last night, this middle reliever would have a W or L decision in 25% of his appearances. That seems REALLY high, and indicative of the fact that he seems completely unable to hold leads.

Reminds me a bit of Scott Proctor. I think the well may be dry.
