Here's a twist - my wife's life insurance is expiring next month and she's in the process of taking out a replacement one. Yesterday they notified us that she won't be renewed if we go to Italy in May as planned. That trip was already in serious jeopardy, but I think now it's a definite cancel.

I've been reading that a lot trip insurance providers are using a January 20th date as a cut off for coverage of trip cancellations due to coronavirus concerns. If you booked a trip before that date and your insurance has provision for coverage than you're likely covered. After that date they consider it a known event and you are out of luck.

There are lots of trip insurance options. I always choose the one where you can cancel at any time for any reason, which can be as much as three times more expensive as the least cost option, but there are too many things that can go wrong to not spend the extra money.

I have tried to purchase that option in the past only to be told I was not eligible due to NYS law.

Who do you use? There are times when I would like that option.

For this option I buy it direct from the tour company, so the travel agent takes care of it. If I'm traveling within the country I buy a much cheaper version since there are cancellation options already offered except for the airlines.

Atlantic City. It wasn't so much about the location (although I do love to gamble) as it was getting the chance to meet with and network with people in my industry that I often only see once per year at this conference.

I think that makes sense. The measures my company is taking is a complete overreaction in my opinion but nothing much I can do about it.

My daughter said one of her classmates is going on a trip to Italy this month. How concerned should I be, and should I let the principal know?

Our school district announced a policy that students returning from trips abroad that are affected by the coronavirus have to self quarantine at home for 2 weeks before they will be allowed to return to the classroom. Your school district's mileage may vary.

I heard on the news this morning that an unintended consequence of Japan closing all their schools for 1 month is that fewer healthcare workers are showing up to work because they have to stay home with their kids.
