The final blow came when the well began to recover more slowly. It was either drill the well deeper or hook up to city water. We went with hooking up to city water and it was best decision I ever made. (I kept the well for irrigation purposes).
Have you told Sarah that hooking up to city water was the best decision you ever made?

She was the reason why the well kept running dry so it didn't take take much convincing. I told her you cant take a shower, do the laundry, run the dishwasher and irrigate the flowers at the same time during a drought at the height of summer but why listen to me when you can complain there's no water?

Connecticut (New Haven) water is crap, by the way, or was in the early 70s.
Wasn't everything crap in the early 70s?

It still was in the mid 90s. That was my first toilet paper crisis.

There is something bizarre about criticizing someone from Hong Kong for employing the current usage in his or her culture for the sin of being xenophobic. That's called ethnocentrism, and is no more desirable than xenophobia.
I would argue that there is a great deal of xenophobia in Hong Kong and all around Asia directed at the mainland Chinese and it has increased significantly in regard to the coronavirus. Google it focusing on local Asian news sources.

Totally agree. Call it "Wuhan ___" or call it "Covid-19", I don't care.

Just don't turn tail and run from anyone who may or may not be Asian like they are Typhoid Mary simply because of their ancestry.

It's not like being a stickler for proper nomenclature will stop people with xenophobic tendencies from acting that way. Everyone knows where the virus first started by now.

Maybe except there are people running from people that appear Asian like they are typhoid Mary. Saying don't do that is not how xenophobia works. That Asian restaurants were some of the first hard hit businesses says something. Xenophobia is not rational nor will it behave rationally. The Trump administration has been using language specifically to get the response that this is a foreign illness ie not their fault.

And how does insisting it be referred to only as "Covid-19" solve any of that?

Like I said, everyone not living under a rock already knows it came from that part of the world. How rationally or irrationally people react from here will not change based on what we decide to call it.

If political correctness was that powerful, history would show that we would have already solved xenophobia, bigotry and many other forms of discrimination well before the outbreak.

Words can be incredibly powerful, but sometimes they're not as powerful as we think they are.

I would argue that this president's constant deflection of blame is causing more harm than the words he uses to reinforce that deflection. Replace his wording with "Covid-19" in any of his speeches and you're still left with a supposed "leader" stoking those same fears of "outsiders".

The refusal to label a disease with its actual geographical origin may have led to the Dark Ages...

                          Wrath of the Gods
In many ancient societies, people believed that spirits and gods inflicted disease and destruction upon those that deserved their wrath. This unscientific perception often led to disastrous responses that resulted in the deaths of thousands, if not millions.

In the case of Justinian’s plague, the Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea traced the origins of the plague (the Yersinia pestis bacteria) to China and northeast India, via land and sea trade routes to Egypt where it entered the Byzantine Empire through Mediterranean ports.

Despite his apparent knowledge of the role geography and trade played in this spread, Procopius laid blame for the outbreak on the Emperor Justinian, declaring him to be either a devil, or invoking God’s punishment for his evil ways. Some historians found that this event could have dashed Emperor Justinian’s efforts to reunite the Western and Eastern remnants of the Roman Empire, and marked the beginning of the Dark Ages.

Luckily, humanity’s understanding of the causes of disease has improved, and this is resulting in a drastic improvement in the response to modern pandemics, albeit slow and incomplete.

History shows us that diseases are "blamed" on the country of origin. Over and over and those citizens reap the consequences. Again, why we're Asian restaurants and marketa the first to suffer loss of business? I posted a link from numerous historians outlining cases of this over the past hundreds of years. It's the same thing again and again. History is not showing us how xenophobia is solved rather how it's perpetuated. And I'd argue that social media has made it worse since words do matter and now they are spread faster. Stephen Miller's fingerprints were all over that Tuesday speech. Stirring xenophobia was not a side effect. It was the point. And of course the inaccurate information, blocking of testing, and deflections from the president cause more harm. So what?

Recognizing the source of a disease and taking action geographically is not the same as placing blame for the disease on the people of that location which is what I'm saying the administration is trying to do. The train had already left the station by the time Trump and friends started in on the "foreign illness" and "Wuhan virus". Their point was to place blame on the other. It's not his fault! He's not responsible! Blame China.
